Western Cape

General information on Western Cape branch activities.

Monthly talks on topics of archaeological interest are given on the second Tuesday of the month from February to November at the SA Astronomical Observatory in Observatory. Our speakers are professional archaeologists or specialists in related disciplines. Members gather half an hour before the talk to chat to each other over a glass of sherry. Guests are welcome at our monthly lectures: fee R20 for guests, and R10 for students/scholars.

Our One Day Lecture series is held annually in conjunction with the Stellenbosch Museum. At this event, four specialists speak on a particular topic. This event is open to the public and is advertised in the press.

We arrange several day outings a year in and around Cape Town for the benefit of our members. Once or twice a year, overnight excursions are arranged to places of archaeological interest out of town. Every now and again we organize an extended excursion to another Province. These are all led by professional archaeologists. We do not participate in digs, although we occasionally visit them by special arrangement with the archaeologists responsible.

The Western Cape branch provides several newsletters a year advertising our activities via email and the website. The Facebook Page of the branch regularly posts items of branch activities and news of general archaeological interest.
