Engraved cattle horns
Justine Wintjes
KwaZulu-Natal Museum & Wits University

In the collections of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum are a number of engraved cattle horns depicting imagery of the Anglo-Zulu War (1879), by a renowned but unnamed maker dubbed the ‘Artist of Newcastle’. Since their description in 1990 by the archaeologist Tim Maggs, then at the Natal Museum, numerous other horns have come to light in museum collections in Europe and North America and for sale at prestigious art outlets. At this storeroom talk, you will be able to view these impressive artworks, as well as several comparative items which provide some context for understanding this novel genre.

We hope to see you there!

Best, Gavin
