TITLE: HERITAGE INVENTORIES – WHO, WHAT, WHERE, HOW AND WHY?

ABSTRACT:
The National Heritage Resources Act provides a number of tools that can be used for the pro-active conservation and management of significant heritage resources. Many of these tools have been, as yet, underutilised. However, this is slowly changing with increased interest in the completion of heritage inventories at a municipal level. This talk will discuss the tools that are available and the consequences of implementing these tools for heritage management. This talk will also reflect on various case studies of heritage inventories that have been completed and how these inventories have or intend to shape the evolution of places including the City of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Knysna and Napier.
