Did San hunter-gatherers use hunting nets?
There is very little conclusive material evidence of net hunting and almost no mention of it in the ethnography. However, rock art researchers have recorded paintings that do seem to depict net hunting. Others have argued that these paintings are not nets but images inspired by neural phenomena rather than real life items.
Curious paintings from the Kouga Mountains near Joubertina in the Eastern Cape clinch the argument: San hunter-gatherers did indeed paint nets. But as seems always to be the case in rock art, there is more to this than meets the eye. I look forward to sharing with you my ideas about these extraordinary paintings and the story that they tell.
